Sawtooth ridge. 3rd class scrambling route from the summit of Mt Bierstadt towards Mt Evans. Took us about 7 hours car to car. It had a bit of a choose your own adventure flavor, since you could avoid most of the scrambling if you wanted. Or you could do what I did, and add unnecessary scrambling. I thought the route finding was pretty straightforward, since there are many options at every point. The climb out at the end looks like steep sketchy dirt from a distance, but it felt safe and solid once we got there.
Photos the top:
- Hiking in in the dark, it is pretty clear how the ridge got named Sawtooth. We headed up the standard trail to the top of Bierstadt on the right, then right to left along the ridge
- From the summit of Bierstadt you can see the whole ridge. We headed down the bowl towards the low point on the ridge near the patch of snow.
- Looking back up in the decent. We skipped an obvious gully decent, instead heading through alpine meadows and coming in skiers right of this lake. Bierstadt is the peak on the right.
